General Information

Bretagne, also known as Brittany, is a gorgeous, scenic region in northwestern France. Brittany's population is about 2.5 million. Brittany's most commonly used dialects include French and the Breton language which is influenced by Welsh.[1]The regions beautiful, scenic landscape and natural beauty could also give it the title of "The picture perfect region".

Geography

Brittany has four departments which are, Finistère, Côtes- d’Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, and Morbihan. The capital of the region is Rennes. In total, Brittany covers 10,505 square miles. Pays de La Loire closely borders Brittany on the eastern side. This gorgeous region has a well suited oceanic climate to match its breath taking sandy beaches on the southern coast. Along with Brittany's famous beaches, there is also "rocky terrain" in the north. The average temperature for the summer is a mild 63.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the winter, a chilly 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only does Brittany have the stunning ocean on its coast, it also has the English Channel in the East, and the Bay of Biscay in the west. In addition to these bodies of water, the Loire River runs through the southern part of the region, near Loire- Atlantique.

History and Culture

Brittany's history goes back a long time to about 8,000 B.C. The regions first settlers came from the UK and Ireland and were known as the "Celts". They named the region "Brittany" after their home country Britain. Brittany had, in a way, a dark past. For a very long time, the region was secluded from the remaining regions of France. The Celts fought in a lot of wars to stay independent from France, but in the 1400's, Brittany became an official region of France. Multiple wars and attacks also took place in Brittany. In 1944 Santo-Malo, a city in Brittany, a German army bombing took place and eighty percent of the old Santo-Malo was destroyed in the attack. [2]

Brittany's culture is very traditional, yet rich. You can find "megalithic sites" throughout the region. Castles, seen below, museums, "fortified towns" and standing stones, are scattered about, keeping a constant reminder of Brittany's past. [3]Brittany's people, known as Bretons, used to wear distinct clothing and costumes, traditional to the region. Some still wear these clothes daily and many wear them on special occasions. Nowadays, most Bretons wear "modern western style clothing". Brittany has a lot of cultural significance to France. The region hosts many religious festivals, music festivals, and the famous Celtic Festival. Some celebrities and historic figures also claim Brittany as their home. Explorer Jaques Cartier, writer

Franҫois René de Chateaubriand, and noble prize winning cosmetologist Jean Jouzel, all come from Brittany.

Tourist Attractions

Probably the most beautiful and most visited places in Brittany are, their world renowned beaches. Brittany has over 3,500 kilometers of coastline, which frequently attracts tourists. Brittany is the perfect destination for sailing and all kinds of water sports. Along with Brittany's beaches, there is also 5,000 miles of trails in the north, which are perfect for horseback riding, biking, hiking and more. Brittany also offers lots of gardens such as "Jardin Exotique de Roscoff" which has exotic plants and vegetation from around the world. If you're looking for a more relaxing excursion, Brittany has many thalassotherapy centers and facilities. Thalassotherapy is using sea water as a method of healing and therapy.[4] In fact Brittany is the birth place of thalassotherapy because of the regions marine climate and benefits from the ocean. As you can see, Brittany has much to offer, and its scenic landscape attracts many tourists to explore the region. [5]

Gastronomy (Food and Drink)

As you probably guessed, Brittany's constant access to the ocean makes sea food a region favorite. Local fish, sea food platters, and shell fish are served throughout the region. Even though Brittany has very high quality sea food and cuisine, the region is more famous for its delectable desserts! Breton Butter Cake, or Koulga Amann, is one of the regions popular desserts. Some other of Brittany's popular desserts are their Crepes, Galettes, and the traditional "Far Breton". If you're ever in the mood for some delicious sea food, or savory desserts, Brittany is the place to go.

Hopefully now, you know much more about the gorgeous, historical, naturally beautiful region, that is Brittany France.
